Building Voice AI That Handles Concurrent Calls at Scale

Most voice AI products demo well on a single call. They fall apart under real load. Latency spikes, transcription accuracy drops, and the system starts queuing responses instead of streaming them. If you run a contact center processing thousands of calls daily, that is not acceptable.

We built Salem Ventures Voice AI to handle high-concurrency call volumes with sub-second end-to-end latency. This runs in production with real callers across financial services clients in the MENA region.

What We Built

A caller speaks. The system listens, understands, and responds -- all in under half a second. Here is what happens in that window:

Listening -- audio streams in real time from the caller. Voice activity detection runs at the edge to know exactly when someone starts and stops speaking.

Understanding -- speech is converted to text, then classified by intent. The system identifies what the caller wants and extracts relevant details like account numbers, amounts, and dates. It supports English, Arabic (Gulf, Egyptian, and Levantine dialects), and mixed-language conversations.

Responding -- based on what the caller needs, the system either pulls a scripted response for simple requests like balance inquiries, generates a contextual response using AI for complex requests like product comparisons, or routes to a human agent for situations requiring judgment like disputes or distressed callers.

Speaking -- the response is converted to natural-sounding speech and streamed back sentence by sentence. The caller hears the first sentence while the system is still generating the rest.

The system scales horizontally at every layer. We deploy across multiple regions so callers connect to the nearest node, keeping latency low regardless of where they are calling from.

Why We Built This

Contact centers are one of the most expensive operations in financial services. The vast majority of inbound calls are routine -- balance checks, transaction inquiries, card activations, payment confirmations. These calls follow predictable patterns and do not require human judgment. But every one of them ties up an agent who could be handling something more complex.

We built Voice AI to automate those routine calls entirely. The goal is straightforward: reduce the cost of handling predictable calls to a fraction of what a staffed contact center costs, while keeping response quality high and latency low enough that callers do not notice the difference.

Financial services has specific requirements that generic voice AI does not address. The AI cannot hallucinate account balances or rates -- every data point is validated against the customer profile before being spoken. Mandatory disclaimers are injected automatically for regulated topics. Every call is recorded and stored per jurisdiction requirements. And if sentiment analysis detects a frustrated caller over consecutive turns, the system automatically offers a human transfer with full conversation context.

This is not a pilot. It runs in production, handling live calls for financial institutions. The system processes the majority of calls autonomously, freeing up human agents to focus on the calls that actually need them.
